Sally Abé and TopJaw launch interactive map to celebrate female-owned hospitality businesses across the UK

A new interactive map highlighting female-owned hospitality businesses across the UK has launched, helping diners discover and support restaurants, pubs, bars, cafés and bakeries owned or co-owned by women.

Created by chef, author and restaurateur Sally Abé and Topjaw producer Kayla Lawrie, the free online map launches with more than 350 businesses already listed. Each entry identifies the business owner, the type of venue and links directly to its social media channels. The creators say the map is intended to grow over time, with further submissions welcomed from across the industry.

The initiative is the latest project from Abé, who has become a leading voice for greater equality and representation within hospitality. In 2024, she published her memoir, A Woman's Place is in the Kitchen, which explores her experiences working in professional kitchens and examines the barriers women continue to face in the industry.

In February 2025, Abé was among a group of 70 female chefs and hospitality professionals who signed an open letter calling for action to tackle sexism and inequality in the sector. The letter was published following comments made by chef Jason Atherton in an interview and highlighted issues including workplace culture, career progression and the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles.

Earlier this year, that conversation continued at HRC, where Abé joined Gemma Evans-Hurley, Head of Culinary at Compass Group, Odette Schwartz, Chief People Officer at Ottolenghi Group, Will Beckett, Co-Founder and CEO of Hawksmoor, and moderator Justine Murphy for the Vision Stage session 'On a Knife's Edge: Why Women's Futures in Hospitality Matter'. The panel saw the launch of HRC's Women in Hospitality Ten-Point Pledge, which encourages businesses to commit to practical actions to improve workplace culture, career progression and the representation of women across the sector.

Hospitality businesses wishing to support the initiative can find out more about the Women in Hospitality Ten-Point Pledge at: https://www.hrc.co.uk/knife-edge-pledge-page.
